History
Curriculum Overview
Year 7
Students start their historical education at Warblington School by completing a three-lesson introduction, looking at who they believe was the Greatest Briton. Students then follow a chronological approach to history.
They start by studying the pre-1066 invasions of Britain, which include the Romans, Anglo-Saxons, and Vikings. This leads into a study of the Medieval period, focusing on the Norman invasion of 1066 and life in Medieval England.
Students move from studying the Medieval period into the Early Modern period, focusing on the interpretations of Richard III and the discovery of his body in the Leicestershire car park. This leads into a unit focusing on the English Reformation and the rise of the Stuarts.
Students complete their Year 7 History course with a unit on local history.
Across KS3, Warblington students will learn a wide variety of historical skills, including the ability to describe, explain, and analyze. They will all develop an understanding of cause and consequence, significance, and source skills.
Year 8
Students continue to follow a chronological approach to history in Year 8.
Students begin studying the British Empire. This is followed by a study of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and the role Britain had.
Students then study conflict in the (20th. This includes the events of World War One, the rise of dictators afterwards, World War Two and the aftermath.
Across KS3 Warblington students will learn a wide variety of historical skills including the ability to describe, explain and analysis. They will all develop an understanding of cause and consequence, significance and source skills.
Year 9
In Year 9 students begin to move away from studying history chronologically and start to focus on themes.
Topics include:
- The Holocaust
- Migration
- Civil Rights
- Crime and Punishment
Across KS3 Warblington students will learn a wide variety of historical skills including the ability to describe, explain and analysis. They will all develop an understanding of cause and consequence, significance and source skills.
Year 10
For History GCSE students follow the Edexcel syllabus.
They cover the following topics:
Medicine through time -
Site study – Medicine on the Western Front (World War One) -
Weimar and Nazi Germany -
Superpower relations (The Cold War) -
Early Elizabethan England -
Students are assessed across three exam papers covering a variety of skills including the ability to describe, explain and analyse the past. Students will analyse sources to assess their usefulness and explain how historical interpretations are formed.
Weekly recall homework will be set in the form of a physical booklet. This will be marked and misconceptions addressed in lessons
Year 11
For History GCSE students follow the Edexcel syllabus.
They cover the following topics:

- Site study – Medicine on the Western Front – C1250-present day
- Weimar and Nazi Germany
- Superpower relations (The Cold War)
- Early Elizabethan England
Students are assessed across three exam papers covering a variety of skills including the ability to describe, explain and analyse the past. Students will analyse sources to assess their usefulness and explain how historical interpretations are formed.
Homework will be in the form of a weekly retrial practice booklet. This will be marked in class and misconceptions addressed.
