Curriculum Overview

KS3

At Warblington KS3 PE gives you the opportunity to explore a variety of different sports throughout the year. Each half term you will participate in two different units of work, therefore experiencing 12 different sports in total over the year.

On your timetable you will have 4 lessons over the fortnight, where you will build up your knowledge and skills technically as well as tactically, with each lesson focusing on a different element of the sport.

To ensure each sport can be covered fully, we base the sports we look at on the seasons they are best suited to, with traditional sports such as football, rugby and netball being played in the winter and sports such as athletics, cricket and tennis being played in the summer. In addition to this, we have now also introduced new units of work such as inclusive sports and orienteering to broaden what is provided to our students.

Outside of lesson time there are plenty of opportunities to get involved in more sports. The PE department offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities throughout the week both before and after school.

As well as clubs, there are also fixtures where we compete against other schools within our federation. Extra-curricular provision is open to all students, and they are encouraged to attend as many as they would like to.

KS4

During core PE lessons at key stage 4 students will continue to participate in the sports studied at key stage 3 but the focus will be on improving tactical awareness and gameplay. As a department we consistently strive for high levels of participation, promoting sport and health-related fitness as lifestyle choices and not something that should stop on leaving school. In year 11 students are given options at the start of every half term allowing them to take more ownership of their curriculum path. New sports are introduced at the start of the half term and the chosen sport is then participated in.

The extra-curricular provision is still readily available for KS4 students where clubs are promoted to all. Fixtures continue to be a big part of what is offered by the PE department where we have had many successes in a wide range of sports against other local schools.

Key Stage 4 Examined Physical Education:

At Key Stage 4, students at Warblington School are offered the chance to enroll on an examined PE course. The course we offer is NCFE’s Level 1/2 Technical Award in Health and Fitness. Areas of study for this course include anatomy and physiology, fitness testing and training programmes. This course is examined in two different ways during Year 11. 60% of a student’s overall grade is weighted towards a project that is completed over 22 hours of in-class time, with 40% of their grade being down to a 90-minute examination.

The project will require the students to adopt the role of a fitness instructor who is responsible for testing, training and assessing a client’s fitness. They write an extended report, detailing all aspects of their work. During the summer exam period, students will sit a paper that covers all aspects of taught content from across Years 10 & 11.

Although the students are not assessed practically as part of the course, we continue to offer practical lessons throughout, with 50% of lessons being practical in Year 10 and 33% of lessons being practical in Year 11. They will continue to participate in statutory core PE alongside this course.
